Editor's note: An exhibition of exquisite baby carriers — known as "beishan" — created by ethnic minority communities in China's southwest was held recently at the China National Arts and Crafts Museum in Beijing.

The traditional cloth sling is used for wrapping and carrying infants, and is often referred to as a "cradle on the back." The exhibition showcased a variety of examples made by members of ethnic groups including the Miao, Shui, Dong, Buyi, Yi and Zhuang.

Donated by collector Ma Zhengrong, the carriers not only present the distinctive cultural features of each ethnic group, but also honor the diverse intangible cultural heritage crafts behind these artistic works, such as Miao papercutting and Buyi embroidery, bringing folk aesthetics, techniques and cultural memories to visitors in Beijing.

The exhibition concluded on June 1.
