Generic versions of the paintings Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (Fuchun Shanjutu) and Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion (Lanting Xu) are in great demand in markets outside of the Chinese mainland, according to leaders of a workshop on ancient art reproduction held by Zhejiang Huaibao Zhai Ltd Co in Zhejiang Province on Monday.
About 3,500 copies of Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains have been reserved for collectors this year, many of whom hail from overseas. Created by Yuan Dynasty artist Huang Gongwang (1269-1354) and set in a mountain range in modern-day Zhejiang Province, the painting is considered one of China's most famous national symbols.
Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion is also considered one of China's most impressive traditional works of art. As the tour-de-force of Jin Dynasty artist Wang Xizhi (303-361), it was a favorite of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty and was copied during that period by imperial painter Feng Chengsu, whose representation eventually became one of five classic reproductions.
Huaibao Zhai printed Feng's version, the longest and considered the grandest out of the five, using the latest and most advanced copying technology. Now up for sale in limited numbers in markets around the world, the reproductions are sure to add another lucrative layer to the already surging market for paintings from China's classical periods.
