The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp started his first Chinese tour for promoting "Transcendence" in Beijing on Monday night.
The 50-year-old Hollywood actor plays a terminally ill scientist who downloads his mind into a computer in the sci-fi drama that asks: What if we could upload a human mind into a computer? The American science fiction thriller also stars Rebecca Hall as Depp's wife and Morgan Freeman.
Depp said he was impressed by its employment of advanced technology, including 3D print. He emphasized that he was also drawn to the film's romantic storyline.
"It's also the love story, the idea that these two scientists very dedicated to this work, to this computer and the possibilities of this AI. When it comes right down to it, what would you do? What would everyone do?" Depp said in an interview.
"If the person you loved were seconds away from death, if you had the opportunity to upload their consciousness into a computer, or let them go. I mean it's a split-second decision almost. It's an interesting thing to ponder because I think we all know what we would do. We would do anything for love."
During the promotional event, Depp played guitar for some 1,000 invited guests and fans and showed off a diamond ring that he called a "chick's ring" on his wedding finger, indirectly confirming rumors of his engagement to actress Amber Heard.
"Transcendence" is set to hit Chinese screens day-and-date with the U.S. on April 18.
