Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, a favorite of socialites, political players and movie stars alike, has died. He was 82.

Actress Jennifer Garner said this about la Renta yesterday outside Elle magazine's "Women of Hollywood" event in Los Angeles:

"Mr. De la Renta loved women. And you saw it in every design that he did. He honored women's features, he honored our bodies. He wasn't afraid to pull back and let the woman be the star of the look."

Garner wore de la Renta dresses to multiple Academy Awards ceremonies, including the Oscars earlier this year.

The Dominican-born De la Renta was among a group of designers that helped put the U.S. on the map in the late 1960s as a home of serious fashion.

His specialty was elaborate, embroidered eveningwear. His designs also made it onto the global stage of politics, with first ladies Laura Bush and Hilary Clinton both donning de la Renta gowns to attend past inaugural balls.

De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs," according to a handwritten note signed by two of his company's executives.
