Kungfu megastar Jackie Chan's son Jaycee Chan, who faced a ban issued by China's government film watchdog due to his recent drug conviction, is appearing in the new film "Monk Comes Down the Mountain," directed by Chen Kaige.

Director Chen Kaige first responded to the controversy over the film's inclusion of scenes featuring Chan at an audience meet-and-greet in Beijing when the film debuted in China Thursday night. He admitted they "had a very tough time" trying to save Chan's scenes.

"First, Jaycee Chan's case happened after I wrapped up filming," Chen said. "Second, we considered the option of finding another actor to reshoot his part, but Yuen Wah, who played the father of Jaycee's character in the film, is too old to do some highly technical and difficult action moves again. Third, we did delete several of [Chan's] scenes. There was actually a full plot line about him and his father in the film. This plot line has been removed, since we only saved the scenes that allowed us to complete the main storyline without harming the structure of the whole film."

The director added, "I hope everyone learned a lesson from him. That is my attitude."

Jaycee Chan was absent from the premiere of "Monk Comes Down the Mountain," and his name was nowhere to be found in the film's promotional materials.
