The 50-year-old star says though she's happy to be back in Cannes, she couldn't help but to feel disappointed at the absence of Chinese films at the festival this year.

She gave her opinion as to why she thinks this is.

"I think we need to, starting with the scripts, starting with guidance from journalists, starting with the filmmakers, we need to tell everyone that movies are not merely for entertainment. It might leave you with something much deeper for your soul. It's not just for laughs, not just for jokes. It's more than that. Right now there's not a lot of people talking about that in China right now, and not a lot of guidance given. However, guidance is very important."

With close to three decades in the business, Gong Li has worked under the direction of Chinese director Zhang Yimou several times, in films like "Ju Dou" and "Rise the Red Lantern."

She achieved moderate success in Hollywood in the 2000s, appearing in "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Miami Vice".
