The Central Asian Film Festival "Living Heritage: Wisdom of Life" kicked off Thursday in the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The festival is organized by the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO together with the International Information and Networking Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific region (ICHCAP) under the auspices of UNESCO.

In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and established a mechanism for international cooperation to preserve living, spiritual heritage.

In accordance with this convention, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and some other countries of the Community of Independent States, together with ICHCAP, implemented a joint project on documentation of intangible cultural heritage in each country, the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO reported.

The film festival, which is part of this project, presents documentaries about various elements of the intangible cultural heritage of five countries.

The grand opening of the festival was attended by local officials, UNESCO representatives and filmmakers.
