First Pingyao International film festival kicks off

The first Pingyao International Film Festival kicked off Saturday in Pingyao City, Shanxi Province, with over 40 films from around the world to be shown on the big screens of Pingyao film palace.

The Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival (PYIFF) was initiated by Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke and festival director Marco Muller.

The festival includes six sections including Crouching Tigers, Hidden Dragons, Galas, New Generation China, Best of Fest and Retrospective/Tributes.

Chinese director Feng Xiaogang's Youth will be screened as the opening film of the festival. Meanwhile, other films include Cannes Golden Palm winner The Square, Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying and Takeshi Kitano's Outrage Coda (his first film to be screened officially in China.)

The event will last until Nov. 4.
