The U.S. video streaming service giant Netflix has acquired Day and Night, its first online series produced in the Chinese mainland.

Netflix unveiled a deal last weekend with Alibaba's flagship video service platform Youku to stream the 32-episode detective drama series in 190 countries and regions outside of China, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The drama features a recused police officer who tries to clear his twin brother from an appalling murder case as a special consultant, while at the same time helping his former colleagues solving other mysteries.

Without casting super stars, the show is widely praised for its lead actor Pan Yueming's superb acting as twin brothers with distinct characteristics.

The drama has been a blockbuster in China since its debut in August, securing over 4.6 billion views on Youku alone.

It has also been rated a 9 out 10 on Douban, a Chinese review site on books, movies and dramas, which often gives harsh comments.

"The cultural industry is undergoing robust growth in China, and I believe the export of high-quality content will help people around the world gain a better understanding of the soft power of China," Yang Weidong, president of Youku, told the SCMP.

"I'm delighted that Youku can become a pioneer in driving this initiative," he added.
