Latvian capital holds Chinese New Year celebration

The China Cultural Center in Riga held its first Chinese New Year gala in the Latvian capital on Feb. 10.

The gala was a part of the "Happy Chinese New Year" series of celebrations, sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Latvia, the China Cultural Center in Riga, as well as the Shanghai and Suzhou municipal administrations of culture, radio, film & TV. 

Chinese and local people attending various events, including cultural performances and a temple fair, shared in the joy of celebrations for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

During the temple fair, Latvian attendees were enthralled by the master craftsmen showcasing embroidery, papercutting, sculpture and other delicate handicrafts with unique charm of southern China. A photo exhibition was also held to present a colorful and eventful Spring Festival in a vivid manner. People also enjoyed games, small gifts and delicious Chinese snacks and food.

A group of artists from Shanghai staged a grand concert in the wake of the temple fair. The orchestra presented a feast of traditional Chinese music as well as the well-known Latvian folk music.
