Among a dozen Barbie's new role models released before 2018 International Women's Day, three are modeled after Chinese female icons Hui Ruoqi, Tan Yuanyuan and Guan Xiaotong.

Hui is a volleyball champion who announced her retirement last month. Tan is the prima ballerina of the San Francisco Ballet where she holds the rank of principal dancer. Guan is one of the most popular Chinese actresses who became the UN ambassador for "World Life Day" in 2017.

On its website, the doll-making company posted pictures of 19 extraordinary women, after whom the new dolls are made. It said in the poster that the roles were chosen from a survey of mothers across the world in a bid to inspire more girls.

The "Shero" dolls, which include the three Chinese icons, are modeled after women currently making headlines, while the "Inspiring Women" series are of women who have made lifelong contributions to the world.

The three "Inspiring Women" in the 2018 series are Frida Kahlo, an artist from Mexico; Amelia Earhart, an aviation pioneer from the United States; and Katherine Johnson, a NASA mathematician and physicist also from the United States.
