The 8th Beijing Reading Season was launched on World Book Day, which fell on April 23. The theme of this year's reading campaign revolves around the themes of the four seasons.

At the launch event, antiquarian and archaeologist Sun Ji spoke on how reading contributes to the passing down and continuation of knowledge and culture from the ancient Chinese civilization.

Ning Ken, winner of the China Good Books Award and author of "Zhongguancun Notes," made a speech on the topic of "growing and progressing amid the fusion of humanity with science and technology."

After seven years of development, the Beijing Reading Season has drawn participation from more than 500 publishing houses and cultural organizations, more than 1,000 social institutions, more than 400 new-type reading spaces, and more than 10,000 professional reading advocates.

Du Feijin, head of Beijing's publicity department, said in his speech that Beijing should establish "putting people first" as the guiding principle of the reading campaign, and integrate reading promotion into reforms of the capital, in order to weave reading into the fabric of people's life through themed events and in at-tractive ways.
