The number of Taiwan's e-publications doubled in 2017, the island's statistics agency said Friday.

A total of 4,136 ebooks, or 10.2 percent of all new books, were published last year. The figures for 2016 were 2,002 and 5.2 percent, respectively.

Combining digital and paper publications, the amount of new books in 2017 was 4.1 percent more than 2016, but still 4.1 percent lower than 2013.

The influence of translated books, taking up 24 percent of the total, was also highlighted in the annual report.

Over half of translated works were from Japan, which is the source of 98 percent of translated comics.

Along with comics, children's literature and fiction were the most translated categories in 2017.
