Otsuki's works were mainly medium to large flower vessels with smooth gold carvings, while Kashima specialized in small and exquisite utensils with damascene inlay, a leading metalworking technology which dates back to 1,200 years ago.

According to Kashima, Japanese metalworking technology was first introduced from China in around 200 BC, and gradually developed its own self-contained aesthetic system.
