The life story of French doctor, Jean Augustin Bussiere, known as France's version of Norman Bethune in China, will be portrayed in a film, according to the film preparation exchange meeting held in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, on Sept. 19.

Jean-Louis Bussiere, son of Dr. Bussiere (1872-1958) recalled his father's 41-year legendary life in China at the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 3rd Sino-French Cultural Forum in Xi'an which took place from Sept. 17 to 20. "I am proud of my father," said Jean-Louis Bussiere. "He opened a new page for the relationship between the peoples of the two countries."

Dr. Bussiere came to China in 1913 to work as a French Embassy doctor. He also served as professor of medicine in Sino-French University founded by Cai Yuanpei and sinologist AndrĂ© d'Hormon. In the villa he built in the western hills of Beijing, later known as Bussiere Garden, he treated not only the local villagers but also wounded soldiers from the 8th Route Army during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. He even risked his life to transfer medicine with his bike from downtown Beijing to his villa to supply China's revolutionary bases.

"Dr. Bussiere made great contributions to China's development," said Cheng Jinpei, deputy director of the Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA), at the film preparation meeting. "We should remember him forever and let more people know about his life story."

The certificate of authorization for the film was also inked by Jean-Louis Bussiere and the WRSA at the meeting.

"I hope to do more for the cultural exchanges between our two countries to memorize my father," said Jean-Louis Bussiere, a famous cardiologist in France.
