Chinese artist Wu Yang has two obsessions in her life — patterned cloth and stones. She used to be a trained designer of patterned cloth, and in Canada where she now lives she has become fascinated with rocks with interesting shapes that catch her eye.

She has since combined the two passions. In her paintings and sculptures, she wraps stones with patterned cloth to give the audience a contrast between soft and the hard, achieving a sort of textural harmony.

These works are now on show at Wu's solo exhibition, "A Sea over Stones", at Beijing's Ici Labas gallery through Nov. 17.
