A cultural creative design contest among capital universities was held in the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology on November 17, aiming to bring modern vitality to traditional handicrafts in Beijing's Yanqing district, the host of the 2019 Int'l Horticultural Expo.

Du Fang, a student from the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, and handicraftswoman Xin Jinping, won the first prize for their painted botanical collage, which includes brooches and a novel design and package.

"Traditional handicrafts are a national treasure and should be inherited by younger generations and further developed," said top prize winner Du. "I've got to know Yanqing's handicrafts these days. I hope my design could bring some vogue to the botanical collage and make it fashionable," said Du, when introducing her design and works on the stage.

To attend the contest, each design student needed to cooperate and work with a local handicraftsman in Yanqing and help to improve the handicraft pattern and package through creative design.

Altogether ten pairs entered the finals with different forms of handcraftsmanship including paper-cutting, leather carving, Chinese knot, hair painting, gourd painting and barbola (the craft of making small models of fruit or flowers from a plastic paste).

The contest, organized by the Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition Coordination Bureau and Yanqing government, was one of the promotion campaigns among universities in Beijing for the expo.

Altogether more than 1 million students from 94 universities will participate in the campaign, which features ten forms of activities including a horticultural knowledge contest, top campus singers, a dance competition, a painting contest and a Yanqing homestay tourism design.
