China in the Eyes of the British, a series of themed books were launched on the opening day of the annual London Book Fair on March 12, 2019.
This event, hosted by the China International Publishing Group (CIPG), is to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of China-UK diplomatic relationship at the level of charge d'affaires.
As the first of its kind held at the London Book Fair, a number of books including China-themed books by the British and UK-themed books by the Chinese were launched and exhibited, which had attracted many political, academic, cultural and publishing celebrities from both countries.
Ma Hui, minister of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, delivered a speech at the event. He noted that the CIPG had shown readers all over the world China's development achievements on the platform of the London Book Fair and told them what kind of the path China had taken in the past 70 years.
Liu Dawei, vice president of the CIPG, said the themed-book exhibition showcased more than one hundred books published by the CIPG over the past 70 years on the subject of bilateral relationship and communication. These books are historical witnesses and cultural symbols of the exchanges between the two countries and reflect the profound and close friendship between the two peoples. They are of special and important significance to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the CIPG.
Michael Bates, a former member of the UK Parliament, and Frances Wood, sinologist and former curator of Chinese collections at the British Library, delivered speeches at the ceremony, discussing their understanding of Chinese politics, philosophy and culture, with reference to the books they wrote or prefaced. And they introduced their observation on the life changes in contemporary China, the tradition of Chinese opera and China's efforts of building a community of shared future for mankind.
About 1500 exhibitors from more than 60 countries have attended the three-day book fair held in west London.
