The Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau hosted the "Charming Beijing" tourism promotion event in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, on March 11. Through activities such as sand paintings and a photo exhibition, the event helped to display the cultural attractions of China. Travel agencies from both sides also had talks about possible cooperation.

The head of the Budapest Festival and Tourism Center said that Hungary has rich tourism resources, and Budapest is a worldwide popular city in particular for tourists and enjoys great reputation in China. Also, Budapest is where China set up its first tourism office in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2017, the number of tourists between the two countries reached 250,000, an increase of 32 percent from 2016. The head said a stronger cooperation between Hungary and China would bring about mutual benefits, adding that more communication will be expected in the future. Moreover, Hungary would continue to provide Chinese tourists with even more convenient services and better experiences.

Shi Anping, an official of the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau, said that with the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Hungary witnessed the greatest bilateral relationship in history, and had achieved a lot in terms of cultural and travel cooperation. This year, the two countries would celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the potential for the cooperation on culture was yet to be fully unleashed. He said he hopes that more Hungarians would visit Beijing to experience its attractions.

After the event, representatives of the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau spoke with a number of travel agencies in Budapest that expressed willingness to participate in the international program to promote Beijing. The bureau said it wanted to develop and foster cooperation with foreign partners, which in turn would encourage more outbound tourists from Eastern Europe to visit China.

In recent years, the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau has actively pursued a regular cooperation mechanism to foster and expand foreign partnership. To realize this, it has studied on the trends of international tourist spending, explored the characteristics and preferences of outbound tourists, and invited foreign partners to design China tours together so as to make them more attractive.

In addition, a photo exhibition titled "Charming Beijing" was held in Budapest's Confucius Institute. There were altogether 40 carefully selected photos, showing Beijing as an ancient capital, as well as a modern metropolis.
