The 9th Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF) will be held from April 13 to 20, the event's organizing committee announced Thursday.

The theme of this year's BIFF is "Home, Country" and it will showcase a diverse selection of pictures from China and abroad and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The festival is co-sponsored by the Beijing Municipal People's Government and the China Media Group with the support of the State Film Administration. According to Wang Jue, executive deputy secretary-general of the BIFF organizing committee, seven major activities are scheduled for the festival this year: The main competition section "Tiantan Awards"; the opening ceremony; out-of-competition section "Beijing Film Panorama"; theme forums "Beijing Plan"; Beijing Market; film carnival; and the closing and awarding ceremony.

The organizing committee will also set up more than 300 activities such as the "Indian Film Week," "Focus on the Future" section, film concerts, and the "Classic Peking Opera Movies" section.

The organizing committee has selected nearly 500 films to be shown starting from April 6. These films will be screened in 30 cinemas, art theaters, and universities in Beijing in 15 days.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the "Beijing Film Panorama" will include a special exhibition on the development of the Chinese film industry in the past decades. A special exhibition "1939, 1959, 2019-Light and Shadow Adventure" will introduce numerous important film works in the development of Chinese films, aiming to pay tribute to great Chinese filmmakers.

The "Focus" section includes special screenings of films by Akira Kurosawa, Alfonso Cuarón, Tsai Ming-liang, and Zhang Lyu. In addition, the "Beijing Film Panorama" gathers award-winning films as well as highly acclaimed films at various international film festivals in the past year, giving a panorama of movies from countries along the Belt and Road.

The "Panorama" section features sections of "China Story," "Vision," and "True First," aiming to provide spectacular viewing experiences for movie-goers of different ages and tastes.

In addition, the 9th BIFF Film Carnival will continue to be held at the National Film and Television Digital Production Base of China (Huairou) Film and Television Industry Demonstration Zone. It includes 27 activities in six major sections, which are intended to showcase the development of China's film industry and the achievements made during the past 70 years.
