One of Sweden's largest newspapers, Metro, which applied for reorganization in March due to extensive debt, announced on Thursday that it will resume publishing.

Metro has an international reputation as the first European free paper. It has traditionally been free of charge and distributed throughout the entire country, often in metro stations. Metro is just one of many newspapers worldwide that have struggled to adapt to the changing media climate.

Swedish commuters will have noticed, however, that for the last month the iconic green boxes have remained empty. On March 29, the paper applied for reorganization in a district court in Stockholm.

The newspaper's debts amounted to a total of about 6.2 million U.S. dollars, including a large amount owed to the Swedish Tax Agency, Expressen reported.

After reorganizing, the paper will return on May 3, though in an entirely different format.

"It will be a whole new product. It is a unique weekly magazine that will contain both entertaining articles and important social journalism," Thomas Eriksson, the newspaper's editor-in-chief, told Media World on Thursday.

The weekly magazine will be sent directly to mailboxes, Swedish Television (SVT) reported. A total of 100,000 copies will be printed of the first edition, to be distributed only in the Stockholm area.
