Broadway musical "Hadestown", which intertwines two mythic stories of love and fear, swept the 2019 Tony Awards with eight trophies on Sunday, including best musical.

"Hadestown" took home eight of its 14 nominations of Broadway's most coveted awards this year, including a rare win for a female director of a musical.

Rachel Chavkin, who become only the 10th woman to win best direction of a musical or a play, said that the lack of gender and ethnic diversity on Broadway is not "a pipeline issue" but "a failure of imagination by a field whose job is to imagine the way the world could be."

She made the remarks Sunday night at the awarding ceremony of 73nd annual Tony Awards in Radio City Music Hall, midtown Manhattan.

As a modern take on Greek mythology, "Hadestown" invites audience to journey with Orpheus and Eurydice, the protagonists, to the underworld of King Hades.

Playwright Jez Butterworth's "The Ferryman" was crowned best play. It depicts a family amid Northern Ireland's sectarian violence in the 1980s.

The award for best leading actor in a musical went to Santino Fontana for his role in "Tootsie," while Stephanie J. Block was honored best leading actress in a musical for "The Cher Show."
