The play "Blossoms," adapted from an award-winning novel of the same name, was staged at the National Theater of China in Beijing from Friday to Sunday.

The play, in Shanghai dialect, was adapted from the 350,000-character novel by Jin Yucheng, which won China's highest literature award Mao Dun Literature Prize in 2015.

It features three childhood friends as leading characters and the storyline jumps between their lives in the 1960s and the 1990s, presenting the sharp differences in a gap of 30 years, said director Ma Junfeng.

According to Wen Fangyi, the playwright, this was the first season of "Blossoms" and the team plans to produce two other seasons.

A distinguished long-length novel about Shanghai, the book itself entangles with past and present and develops its plots in recession and circuitous way. It was also noted for adopting the Shanghai dialect in writing.
