Disney's "The Lion King" dominated the North American box office charts this weekend, bringing in a smashing 185 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.

The figure is the second-best domestic debut of the year so far behind Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," and seventh largest of all-time. The film's debut in 4,725 locations was also a record and the debut was also the largest ever for a PG-rated film.

Director Jon Favreau's remake of the animated classic collected a massive 531 million dollars worldwide.

In a distant second place, Sony's "Spider-Man: Far From Home" collected 21 million dollars during its third weekend in theaters, lifting domestic ticket sales to 319.6 million dollars. The superhero adventure has generated 970.7 million dollars worldwide.

Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 4" landed in third with 14.6 million dollars. In five weeks, the animated movie has generated 375.5 million dollars in North America and 859.4 million dollars globally.

Paramount's alligator thriller "Crawl" stood fourth place with 6 million dollars for a domestic tally of 23.8 million dollars.

Rounding out the top five is Universal's musical rom-com "Yesterday," which pocketed 5.1 million dollars during its fourth weekend of release.

In a banner weekend for Disney, its "Avengers: Endgame" crossed 2.79 billion U.S. dollars at the global box office, officially dethroning the 10-year record of James Cameron's "Avatar" to become the highest grossing worldwide release of all-time.
