The following is a list of major shows, concerts, exhibitions and events in China Tuesday, Aug. 20:

-- Opera "La Fanciulla del West"

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Opera House, National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Beijing

Based on the drama "The Girl of the Golden West," the opera tells about a story of money, love, salvation and forgiveness that takes place in California during the gold rush.

The NCPA production will gather singers from both home and abroad under the direction of Thaddeus Strassberger and with Andrea Battistoni taking the baton.

-- Ballet "Swan Lake" by Matthew Bourne

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: SAIC-Shanghai Culture Square

Following the original music and plot of the classic Russian ballet "Swan Lake," the adapted version is most famous for showing a different image of a swan that is performed by male dancers instead of female ones traditionally.

A magnum opus of British choreographer and director Matthew Bourne, the performance made its debut in London in 1995. It was staged in China for the first time in 2014 and was revived in 2018.

-- Original musical "Notre Dame de Paris"

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center

Based on the eponymous novel by Victor Hugo, the smash-hit musical "Notre Dame de Paris" tells a love tragedy between a young and beautiful gypsy girl named Esmeralda and Quasimodo, the hunchback bell-ringer of Notre Dame.

The French version returned to Chinese theaters after touring China in 2002. Since its premiere in Paris in 1998, the musical has been staged over 5,000 times worldwide with eight language versions.
