A Cologne-based German string orchestra performed a concert on Sunday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

The program, presented by the Guerzenich Orchestra Cologne, includes some of the best-known Chinese orchestral works and orchestral renderings of famous Chinese melodies, such as "My Motherland," "Yellow River Concerto," and "Ode to the Red Flag."

The concert was attended by more than 200 German and Chinese guests. Henriette Reker, the mayor of Cologne, said she was happy to see that ties between Cologne and China have grown closer, and the closeness is represented not only in the economic sphere but also in cultural exchanges.

Feng Haiyang, consul-general of the Chinese Consulate in Dusseldorf, said Cologne has been a spearhead for Sino-German relations and the concert is an occasion to celebrate the love of life and to champion the spirit of partnership.

Cologne and Beijing became sister cities in September 1987.

It was the first time that a German orchestra has performed Chinese musical pieces to mark the founding anniversary of the PRC, which falls on Oct. 1, according to the organizer.
