The Shandong International Friendship Cities Conference for Cooperation and Development kicked off in east China's Shandong Province Tuesday, with more than 800 foreign guests attending the event.

This year marks the 40th anniversary since Shandong began to form sister-city relations with international cities.

The conference, aiming to further boost trade cooperation and people-to-people exchange between cities in Shandong and the world, is being held in Jinan, capital of Shandong, and the coastal city of Qingdao from Oct. 15 to 20.

A total of 886 foreign guests from 33 countries, including sister-city delegates and foreign diplomats in China, are participating in the conference.

An opening ceremony, diverse forums focusing on medium- and small-sized enterprises and culture and tourism promotion, a photo exhibition, and a trade fair will be held during the conference.

Qingdao and Shimonoseki, a Japanese city in Yamaguchi prefecture, first became sister cities in 1979. The province has established sister-city relations with over 200 cities in 61 countries over the past 40 years.
