Australian theater goers have pulled off a major coup on Friday, with Sydney becoming the first city outside of the U.S. to secure the Disney smash hit musical Frozen.
Released in 2013 as a feature film, the highly acclaimed children's story raked in over 1 billion U.S. dollars at the box office, making it the highest-grossing animated movie of all-time until it was later surpassed by the Lion King in 2019.
Set to be a major economic windfall for the State of New South Wales, Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said that landing the musical adaptation that has captivated audiences on Broadway further reinforces our state's reputation as Australia's cultural capital.
"This hit musical will attract an estimated 73,000 visitors to our spectacular Harbor City who will inject more than 46 million Australian dollars (32 million U.S. dollars) into our economy," he said.
With tickets going on sale Friday, it's expected the children's classic will sell out fast.
"From the time we announced that Frozen the Musical would be opening in Sydney in July 2020, we have received the most overwhelming response from the public," Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company (Australia & New Zealand) Kylie Watson-Wheeler said.
"It is thrilling that Australia is the first international destination for this beautiful production and we cannot wait to open it at the spectacular Capitol Theater in Sydney."
