The Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) officially establishes its new Belt and Road Academy to promote sinology and holds the first Belt and Road sinology and cultural development forum in Beijing on Jan. 7, 2020.

Nearly 50 sinologists from 30 countries along the Belt and Road such as Iran, Mongolia, Malaysia, Denmark as well as 100 Chinese experts and scholars gathered to shed light on the development of sinology. Among those who attended were Mahbub Uz Zaman, Bangladeshi Ambassador to China, Liu Limin, former Vice Minister of Education of China, and Huo Yuzhen, the Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for China-CEEC Cooperation.

"The BLCU has educated nearly 200,000 international students from over 190 countries since its establishment 58 years ago, " said Liu Li, president of the BLCU. "As a university that has educated and liaised with the largest number of sinologists, it is time for us to build a scientific research base centering on sinology studies."

It is reported that the Belt and Road Academy of the BLCU will be dedicated to building a think tank with sinologists at its core, integrating the research resources of Chinese studies relating to the Belt and Road, and establishing a sound mechanism of public opinion monitoring, research and analysis.

So far, the talent pool of sinologists and translators at the Chinese Culture Translation and Studies Support Network (CCTSS), a non-profit platform which is also run by the BLCU, has worked to liaise and connect nearly 5,000 sinologists from across 93 countries and 63 languages.

Domestic and foreign experts from different fields participated in breakout sessions and thematic discussions at the forum. Heated discussions also took place on several topics such as the foundations of sinology and cultural landscapes along the Belt and Road, the development of sinology and cultural connectivity along the Belt and Road and the development and application of local Belt and Road-related think tanks.
