The Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport on March 18 announced an initiative to help Spaniards who are becoming bored after four days of lockdown as a result of the coronavirus.

Spain has been in virtual lockdown since a 15-day State of Alarm was declared by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday, severely restricting most people's freedom of movement in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19.

All art galleries, theaters, cinemas, libraries and museums have been closed as part of the measures, but the initiative "Culturaentucasa" (Culture in your home) aims to persuade people forced to stat ay home to take advantage of the Ministry's wealth of online resources.

Under the hashtag #lacurlturaentucasa, the Ministry of Culture and Sport offers citizens the chance to take virtual visits of art exhibitions, watch videos of theatrical productions, films and concerts and also take advantage of online books and audio books.

In a press communique, the Ministry informs that the online offer is entirely free and aims to "help provide an alternative," while everywhere is closed.

Among the museums that can be visited virtually are the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the world famous Galleria del Prado, the Reina Sofia -- which allows visitors to view 170 videos and the National Sculpture Museum in Valladolid.

The National Archeological Museum is also open for virtual visitors, offering a selection of illustrations and audiovisual material, while there is also a chance to visit places such as the National Museum of Decorative Arts, among others.

Viewers also can watch classic Spanish films from the "Vimeo" Film Library, while the National Museum of Scenic Arts has a wealth of material, including videos of plays, ballet and contemporary dance and concerts that can all be accessed from home.

By March 18, there were 13,716 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Spain, 2,538 more than on March 17.
