The organizer of the Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) said on Wednesday that this year's festival will be held online due to the "alarming epidemiological situation" and high COVID-19 infections in the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) capital.

The decision was made according to the instructions of the relevant authorities to avoid all public gatherings and reduce the movement and social contacts to the minimum, said the organizer.

Over the past weeks, the organizer had tried to reduce the capacity of the theaters in order to respect the social distance recommendation but that was not enough to minimize the public health risk.

The audience will now be able to experience the 26th edition of the SFF through the online platform ondemand.sff.ba.

The festival, which lasts from Aug. 14-21, will open with the world premiere of the Bosnian film director Pjer Zalica's new movie "Koncentrisi se baba" (Focus Grandma). Fourty-nine films will compete for the Heart of Sarajevo awards this year.

Over the past 25 years, the SFF has grown into a major cultural event in BiH and South-East Europe. It serves as a common platform for film businesses from all over the region, setting the future standards in festival organization, film promotion and presentation in South-East Europe.

The COVID-19 situation in BiH has worsened over the past month. To date, the country has recorded 13,138 cases and 379 deaths.
