Amid the 17th Shanghai Book Fair opening on August 12 at Shanghai Exhibition Center (SEC), a special reading-focused event will be celebrated between literary aficionados and luminaries through online and offline dialogues.

The International Literary Week (Shanghai), the annual book fair's derivative event, celebrates the 10th anniversary this year. Designed to rally the world's renowned literary figures to join in the weeklong panel discussions, the event will commence with foreign-language literature, including, English, French and Russian, and end with sci-fi writings.

"Despite the continuous spread of the pandemic, the internet has played a significant role in uniting all bookworms across the world to heed the cultural carnival running in Shanghai," said Sun Ganlu, vice chairman of the Shanghai Writers' Association and also the initiator of the event.

"Although the panelists may not be able to gather on spot as they did in previous years, we still have lots to share," he added.

To prevent the COVID-19 pandemic returning, visitors are required to book in advance before accessing SEC, where an additional area is open to public this year to increase the exhibition hall to 26,000 square meters.

According to Xu Jiong, director general of Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau, the extended area will help divide streams of people visiting the booths in a less crowded way.

The book fair will close on August 18.
