Annual Kolkata film festival postponed due to COVID-19 in India

The annual Kolkata International Film Festival in India has been postponed from the scheduled Nov. 5-12 to January due to the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film festival hosted by Kolkata, the capital of India's eastern state of West Bengal, is rescheduled for Jan. 8-15, 2021 for its 25th edition, according to the state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.

She tweeted, "After receiving global film fraternity's consent, I hereby inform all stakeholders of Kolkata International Film Festival & cinema lovers that our festival has been rescheduled, given the current circumstances. It will now be held from January 8-15, 2021."

The Kolkata International Film Festival is among the oldest of its kind in India. It is organized each year by the West Bengal Film Centre under the state government.

On Thursday India's COVID-19 tally surpassed the 8-million mark, including 49,881 new confirmed infections recorded nationwide in the past 24 hours.

With 517 deaths newly reported in the past 24 hours, the total death toll in India from COVID-19 rose to 120,527, showed the official data.

Still there are 603,687 active COVID-19 cases in the country, and 7,315,989 people have recovered and discharged from hospitals so far.
