'Sound of Music' star Christopher Plummer dies at 91

Christopher Plummer, the Canadian actor best known for his role as Captain von Trapp in 1965's musical drama film "The Sound of Music," has died at the age of 91, a statement posted on his social media account confirmed on Friday.

Plummer died peacefully Friday morning at his home in Connecticut, the United States.

"Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots," said his longtime friend and manager Lou Pitt in a statement, noting Plummer "was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots."

"Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us," the statement added.

Plummer was born on Dec. 13, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In a career that spans over seven decades in film, television and theatre, Plummer has received numerous accolades for his performance, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards.

Plummer won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for the film "Beginners" at 82. He remains the oldest actor to win an Oscar statuette.

He was inducted into the American Theater's Hall of Fame in 1986 and Canada's Walk of Fame in 1999.
