Hong Quangen, a 71-year-old man in Suzhou, created a core architecture miniature of Five Peaks Garden (Wufengyuan) in the city.

The miniature, tens of centimeters in length and width, is as exquisite as the real thing.

All parts of the miniature like upturned eaves, tiles, roof ridges resemble the real architecture, with all windows capable of opening and closing.

"I like sipping tea in the Five Peaks Garden. After drinking tea, I'll take pictures of this garden. One day, I envisaged to make a miniature of this garden at home," said Hong.

Hong was a carpenter and got the idea of making miniatures of classical gardens of Suzhou after his retirement. He began his work in 2019.

"I used movable mortise and tenon joints. Houses of ancient Chinese style have upturned eaves, just like this one. On the roof are beams and rafters. This tile cost me two months to carve. All the windows feature movable mortise and tenon joints," said Hong.

The micro model was completely reproduced according to the structure of the Five Peaks Garden. Its 24 pillars, 32 long windows, panes and tiles were assembled without using a nail.

It took Hong more than two years to finish this miniature.

"It's like some kind of emotional anchorage and I also want to promote the culture of classical gardens of Suzhou," he said.

Hong hopes to supplement the model with pavilions, bridges and stone lions later, to create a complete miniature of south China garden landscape.
