4. Flying kites

In ancient China, kites were known as "zhi yuan" (literally "paper gledes") and "yuan'er" ("gledes"), with gledes being a type of bird of prey. Kite-flying is one of the most favored activities during Qingming Festival. People fly kites not only during the daytime but also at night. In the nighttime, a string of colorful tiny lanterns, which are called "magic lamps," hung under the kite, look like twinkling stars. In the past, some people cut the strings after they send the kites up in the air, letting the breeze take them to the ends of the earth. It is said that this can eliminate diseases, dispel disasters, and bring people good luck.
