5. Playing with the Lord Rabbit (Tu'er Ye)

Playing with the Lord Rabbit is a popular Mid-Autumn Festival custom in northern China. According to legend, after Chang'e flew into the sky and landed on the moon, she lived in the Moon Palace with a rabbit. Therefore, the image of the Lord Rabbit has gradually been deeply rooted in people's hearts with the evolution of folklore.

Some people turn rabbit figurines into warriors with golden helmets and armor made from clay and paper in imitation of opera characters. Some figurines depict the Lord Rabbit riding a lion or an elephant, and others have him carrying paper flags or umbrellas, sitting or standing, or grinding medicine with a pestle. Initially, the Lord Rabbit was used to worship the moon on the Mid-Autumn Festival. During the Qing dynasty, however, the character evolved into a children's toy often played with during the festival.
