Horror film 'Smile' tops North American box office on opening weekend

Paramount's horror film "Smile" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 22 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

"Smile" follows a therapist who must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient.

The film holds an approval rating of 75 percent based on 118 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a "B-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

In a distant second place, Warner Bros. Pictures' psychological thriller "Don't Worry Darling" took in 7.3 million dollars on its second weekend.

Rounding out the top three, Sony's presentation of TriStar Pictures' historical epic film "The Woman King" earned a North American total of 46.7 million dollars.
