HONG KONG, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong on Monday gave the approval for passenger fuel surcharges levied by three airlines to be reduced in August.

They included All-Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

The new maximum surcharges will be 219 HK dollars (28.22 U.S. dollars) for short-haul flights and 973 HK dollars for long-haul flights, representing reductions of 8 percent and 7 percent from the current maximum levels for short- and long-haul flights respectively.

Passenger fuel surcharges seek to allow airlines to partially recover the increase in operational costs due to fluctuations in aviation fuel prices.

Passenger fuel surcharges are reviewed regularly by the Civil Aviation Department. The last review was done at the end of June when the maximum surcharge levels approved by the department were 237 HK dollars for short-haul flights and 1,043 HK dollars for long-haul flights.
