The 23rd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM 2012) opened in Beijing on Monday.
The event has attracted 1,500 industry representatives from 66 countries and will run until Friday, according to the event's organizers.
The event is being held in China for the first time this year.
"The holding of this congress is a milestone for China's development in this field," said Hu Haiyan, president of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the chief sponsor of the congress.
Hu said China has made constant advancements in terms of mechanical research quality in recent years, using new breakthroughs to spur economic development.
Hu cited the role of mechanical engineers in ensuring the success of the Three Gorges Project, as well as China's manned space missions and lunar exploration program.
The congress will feature multiple lectures, reports and seminars, according to the event schedule.
