Chinese banks have been criticized by netizens as stingy after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Sichuan Province.

By Monday, 14 lenders on the Chinese mainland have donated a total of 100 million yuan (US$16 million) to the quake-hit areas.

Netizens blasted the banks, which raked in huge profits, as stingy for the measly donation.

China's big-five lenders - the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, the Agricultural Bank of China, the Bank of China and the Bank of Communications - have made a combined donation of 52 million yuan so far, falling behind Samsung China's 60 million yuan.

The Chinese units of Foxconn Technology Group and Apple Inc have donated 50 million yuan each.

Some netizens also took issue with the lenders who "have money to pay out high salary, but no money for donations" after some top bankers make above 10 million yuan a year.
