Industrial electricity sales in South Korea rose last month due to a growth in exports, which account for more than half of the economy, a government report showed Wednesday.
Power sales in the industrial sector, a barometer of industrial activities, reached 21.89 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in April, up 3.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).
The ministry attributed to the rise to a growth in exports, which increased 0.4 percent in April from a year before.
Power demand from auto and chip industries, two major export sectors, grew 2.6 percent and 3.9 percent each in April from a year ago. Those from chemical and machinery equipment sectors gained 2 percent and 3.5 percent respectively.
Total power sales, including household and industrial demand, advanced 1.3 percent in April from a year earlier. The figure for educational facilities purpose increased 2.3 percent, while those for general and household usages declined 0.8 percent and 0.3 percent each.
