China's summer grain output rose slightly this year, partly due to intensified government support for agriculture and favorable weather conditions, an official statement said Friday.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement on its website that summer grain production reached 131.89 million tonnes this year, up 1.5 percent, or 1.96 million tonnes from that of 2012.

The output of winter wheat, a major crop that ripens in summer, grew 1.3 percent year on year to 115.67 million tonnes.

"The country's summer grain saw a relatively good harvest, as local authorities have continued to intensify their support for grain production and fully capitalize on science and technology," the statement said.

The central government has earmarked at least 2.5 billion yuan for summer crop production, including funds for pest and disease control for winter wheat.

Weather conditions in main crop-growing regions have been normal since last year's sowing period, the statement said.

In 2012, China's summer grain output rose 2.8 percent to 129.95 million tonnes year on year. Total grain output increased 3.2 percent to reach 589.57 million tonnes, marking the ninth consecutive year of growth, NBS data showed.
