China's Internet giant Baidu has launched a project to develop unmanned cars, TechWeb reported Thursday, citing people close to the matter.

According to the report, the unmanned vehicle is expected to automatically recognize traffic signs and will be equipped with radar, camera, GPS and a synchro transmitter. The vehicle will be able to launch automated driving to the destination pre-entered to its GPS system.

TechWeb has received confirmation on the report from Baidu insiders through a telephone interview.

The unmanned vehicle is still in the closed-door developing phase, and will start road tests as soon as this year. Its system will put factors including traffic lights, vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions all together and achieve unmanned driving through artificial intelligence technology.

Baidu has also been reported to be developing unmanned bicycles earlier this month.

The above two projects are conducted by Baidu's Institute of Deep Learning (IDL). IDL was established by Baidu CEO Robin Li in 2013 and has since been conducting research in fields of deep learning, big data analysis, human-computer interaction, 3D vision, heterogeneous computing and image recognition.
