Chief Executive Tim Cook says the company could have sold even more iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models if supplies had been available.
Pre-orders for the new phones, which went on sale in 10 countries, reached four million, twice as many as that for the iPhone 5 model two years ago.
Apple expects sales of the new, larger-screen sets to see a dramatic increase when they are made available in 20 more countries this coming Friday.
Sales in the Chinese mainland have yet to start due to regulatory issues.
Apple is waiting to gain a network access license, the last hurdle for the iPhone 6 to go on sale here in China.
