Airbus delivered 688 commercial aircraft in 2016, according to Airbus China on Thursday.

In 2016, Airbus received 731 commercial aircraft orders worldwide, said Airbus China.

"We recorded a net book-to-bill above one, in a year we delivered more commercial aircraft than ever before," said Tom Enders, Airbus CEO.

He said that Airbus has increased efficiency through integration and investment in digital transformation will further improve competitiveness.

Airbus delivered 153 commercial aircraft to Chinese operators in 2016, its seventh consecutive year of more than 100 deliveries.

The deliveries included 141 single-aisle A320 and 12 A330.

"We have been partnering with Chinese companies for many years and showed strong presence in China," said Enders.

Airbus is expected to deliver the first A330 aircraft from its Tianjin plant in September.

Also in Tianjin, a joint venture between Airbus and Chinese partners has delivered more than 300 A320 since 2008.

As a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services, Airbus generated revenue of 67 billion euros (around 70.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2016 and employed a workforce around 134,000 worldwide.

Airbus expects to deliver more than 700 commercial aircraft in 2017.
