Beijing is scheduled to complete 100 traffic easing programs by the end of 2017 to improve urban commuting, says the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on June 12.
With some easy reconstructions and modifications like widening the road and repositioning the road junctions, traffic-easing solutions can be compared with minor “surgeries” that could deal with the “urban disease” effectively and meet the public demand, said Rong Jun, spokesperson of the commission.
The transport commission and the six district-level governments in Beijing have implemented a total of 718 traffic-easing programs over the past five years, which include extending bus transit lanes, introducing an integrated public transportation system in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, promoting electronic toll collection (ETC) system, and modifying sidewalks and cycle ways.
The transport commission says it is also working with public security and traffic control authorities to explore a smart traffic management system and conduct research on more traffic easing solutions in downtown Beijing and the city’s sub-center.
