Alibaba Group, a Chinese e-commerce giant, is recruiting people over 60 to work as "senior research fellows" for the shopping habits of middle-aged and elderly consumers.

A recruitment ad posted on Jan. 16, 2018 has gone viral online.

The e-commerce giant is offering the job with an annual salary of between 350,000 yuan (US$55,330) and 450,000 (US$69,952).

The job requires applicants to live in harmony with their families, and have stable social circles among middle-aged and elderly people where they demonstrate influential personalities. Key opinion leaders of open-air fitness dancing groups and those working in community committees will be given a preference in the recruitment.

Besides, applicants have to show they have at least one year of experience of online shopping, with priority given to those with three years of such experience. Another requirement is that applicants are interested in reading psychology and sociology and have a passion for philanthropic work.

Moreover, they should be highly communicative, empathetic and able to understand the feelings of online shoppers.

Once employed, they are supposed to organize symposia, issue surveys, or seek comments among their contemporaries in order to collect feedbacks about shopping through a new mobile app of Alibaba's Taobao.com designed specially for elderly consumers.

The new job is expected to help Alibaba gain deep insights into the shopping habits of the middle-aged and elderly population, who are becoming an important segment of Chinese consumers.

According to Alibaba Group, its staff members are now working overtime to screen the mounting resumes, and candidates selected from the first round of screening will get a chance to talk with product managers in the ensuing interviews.

"We expect old people to offer us advice and suggestions based on which we can improve our services for this particular group", said an anonymous staff member from Taobao.com, the trailblazing e-commerce platform founded by Alibaba Group.
