Chinese companies are focusing on improving the quality of their products and services, according to a research report released at the 14th Conference on the Latest Trends of Sustainable Development in Beijing on April 18.
The "Stage Report on the Development of China Corporate Sustainability Index" shows that the majority of companies in the research emphasized the importance of high-quality products and services in their publicly released information, and about half have introduced specific measures to improve quality, such as applying more rigorous quality management systems and strengthening staff training.
The scoring rate of the indicator called "Quality Improvement" is 81.4 percent, the report says.
The research was conducted by two Chinese business associations, the China Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD) and China Enterprise Confederation.
It assessed more than 100 Chinese companies' capacity for sustainable development using 68 indicators in three categories, namely market competitiveness, environmental protection and social relationships.
The companies ranged from over a dozen industries, including petroleum, steel, mining, finance, communication, information technology and automobile manufacturing.
The research aims to establish objective and universal standards for assessing Chinese companies' capacity for sustainable development and providing guidance for them to achieve their goals, said Yuan Ya from CBCSD, a key member of the project team.
In this year's government work report, Premier Li Keqiang said that China would "take steps in all sectors to improve quality" and "ignite a revolution in the quality of Chinese-made goods".
The Conference on the Latest Trends of Sustainable Development was an annual event held by CBCSD.
Under the theme of "Deepening Reform and Opening-up, Corporate Sustainability in the New Era", this year's conference brought together more than 160 officials, experts and business leaders to discuss methods to facilitate China's sustainable development.
