Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Thursday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index plummeting over 3 percent, following Wall Street's overnight tumble on concerns about a spike in long-term U.S. Treasury yields.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 765.04 points, or 3.25 percent, from Wednesday to 22,741.00.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, plummeted 56.67 points, or 3.21 percent, to 1,707.19.

Oil and coal product, mining and machinery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
